Apple lifted the curtain on its next-generation desktop operating system, macOS Tahoe, at WWDC 2025. Packed with enhancements powered by Apple Intelligence, deeper integration with iPhone, and a major redesign, Tahoe marks one of the most forward-looking macOS updates in years.
A Fresh Look: Liquid Glass Interface
The most visually striking change in macOS Tahoe is the introduction of Apple’s new “Liquid Glass” UI design. This sleek, semi-transparent interface brings a glass-like sheen and customizable aesthetics to your Mac. For the first time, users can personalize folder icons with custom colors — yes, that means you can now turn your folders pink, blue, or anything in between.
Borrowing from the visual overhaul in iOS 26, macOS Tahoe’s design embraces clarity, depth, and fluid transitions to offer a more immersive desktop experience.
iPhone + Mac: Smarter Together
With enhanced Continuity features, macOS Tahoe strengthens the bond between your iPhone and Mac. Now, Mac users will see Live Activities from their iPhone — such as real-time updates about rides, deliveries, or timers — mirrored on their desktop.
In a first for macOS, a dedicated Phone app is arriving, bringing iPhone features like Call Screening and Hold Assist to the Mac. These updates also extend to Messages and FaceTime, which will now include Live Translation, letting users seamlessly translate conversations across languages in real time.
Spotlight Gets an AI Boost
One of the most significant improvements in macOS Tahoe is an upgraded Spotlight Search, now infused with Apple Intelligence. The revamped Spotlight goes beyond simple search — it anticipates your needs by surfacing relevant actions and content based on your habits and current activity.
In a WWDC demo, an Apple exec showed how you can now compose and send a full email directly from Spotlight — no need to open the Mail app.
Also new are custom quick keys, which allow users to trigger actions with just a few characters. For example, typing “AR” might create a new reminder, while “SM” could launch a message composer.
More AI and iOS 26 Features on the Mac
Many of the standout features from iOS 26 are also making their way to macOS Tahoe:
Genmoji: Create AI-generated emojis to express yourself in new ways
Image Playground: Generate visuals using AI directly on your Mac
AI Reminders: Smart suggestions and reminders based on context
Apple Games App: A dedicated space for gaming on macOS
Interactive Messages: Use backgrounds and run polls in chats
FaceTime Hub: A new landing page for FaceTime calls
Journal App: Now available on Mac, ideal for daily reflections or notes
Release Timeline for macOS Tahoe
Apple announced that macOS Tahoe will officially launch this fall, with a public beta expected in July. Developers already have early access to test and build for the new platform.
