OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is officially expanding its footprint in India with the launch of its first office in New Delhi. This move underlines the company’s commitment to “build AI for India, with India” and aligns with the government’s IndiaAI mission to promote artificial intelligence adoption across the country.
India’s Growing Role in AI
India is currently OpenAI’s second-largest market after the United States and has experienced remarkable growth in ChatGPT usage over the past year. The platform now hosts the largest population of student users globally, with overall adoption increasing more than fourfold. The decision to open a local office reflects OpenAI’s recognition of India’s thriving tech talent, robust developer ecosystem, and proactive government support.
Statements from OpenAI Leadership
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman highlighted India’s potential as a global AI leader, stating:
“The level of excitement and opportunity for AI in India is incredible. India has all the ingredients to become a global AI leader—amazing tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem, and strong government support through the IndiaAI Mission. Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India.”
Government Support
Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Railways & Information Broadcasting, welcomed OpenAI’s move, noting:
“OpenAI’s decision to establish a presence in India reflects the country’s growing leadership in digital innovation and AI adoption. With strong investments in digital infrastructure, AI talent, and enterprise-scale solutions, India is uniquely positioned to drive the next wave of AI-led transformation. OpenAI’s partnership will help ensure that the benefits of AI reach every citizen.”
Upcoming Initiatives in India
While OpenAI has yet to disclose the exact location of its New Delhi office, the company has already begun recruiting a local team and formalizing its presence in the country. In the coming months, OpenAI will announce further details, including its office setup and planned activities.
In addition, OpenAI will host its first-ever Education Summit in India, aimed at students, educators, and technology enthusiasts.
